Introduction to GM Chen Xiaowang
Grandmaster Chen is the son of Chen Zhaoxu, and the 19th generation inheritor of his family's style of Taijiquan. He was born in 1945 in Chenjiagou, Henan, China, and began studying Taijiquan at the age of 7. GM Chen has received numerous honors for his Taijiquan prowess, and is also a noted calligrapher and scholar. His gentle manner and clear and concise teaching style has earned him the reputation as one of the best Taijiquan instructors in the world. His stunning demonstrations of his family's martial art give him claim to being the best Taijiquan practitioner in the world. He is considered a living treasure. His goal is to transmit his love of Taijiquan to students everywhere, and he has gathered a loyal and enthusiastic following worldwide.
Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang conducts seminars at the Sanctuary once a year, and his brother Chen Xiaoxing, nephew Chen Bing, and senior student Ren Guangyi also come to San Diego to conduct seminars. Form instruction from the Chen Village system includes the 38 Form, the Laojia (Old Frame) Yi Lu (First Set), which was most likely the original taijiquan form, Laojia Er Lu (Second Set) and the Taijiquan weapons forms (spear, double edged sword, broadsword and kwandao).
The Yang lineage at the Sanctuary is passed on from Yang Cheng Fu to Cheng Man Ching to Abraham Liu. Abraham Liu began to study the long form with CMC in 1935 in Nanjing, then rejoined CMC in Taiwan in 1948, when he learned the short form. Yang style short form and long form are taught at the Sanctuary.
