Taijiquan Classes
The Taoist Sanctuary offers classes in Chen Style Taijiquan as taught by Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang. Grandmaster Chen is the 19th generation Standard Bearer of Chen Style Taijiquan, which is the original style of Taijiquan. Master Chen travels yearly to San Diego to teach Chen StyleTaijiquan, and he has developed several levels of the form so that anyone can easily learn Chen Style.
We also host seminars with Grandmaster Chen Xiaoxing (Chen Xiaowang's brother and head instructor in Chen Village), Master Chen Bing (Chen Xiaowang's nephew), and Master Ren Guangi, one of Grandmaster Chen's top students in the USA.

We teach the 38 Form as our first form, with an emphasis on health and gentle strengthening. Iinstruction also includes Chen Style Silk Reeling exercises, which form the basis for the moves and postures in the form. The 38 Form instruction is completed in approximately 6 months. After corrections on the 38 Form, students can progress to beginning Push Hands training, a weapons form, then to the longer Laojia Form, which is actually the original Taijiquan form, and the emphasis will shift to the more martial aspects of Taijiquan. Instruction in these classes includes power training, Push Hands, and more weapons training, including sword, broadsword, kwandao and spear forms.

Class material varies across the semesters. Systems taught include the Tao Tan Pai set, Hua To's Frolics of the Five Animals, Dr. Xie Peiqi's Yin Fu Bagua system, and Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang's standing post exercises. Classes consist of both instructional practice and repetition.
Tuesday evening class begins with a seated meditation to calm oneself and disperse tension accumulated during the day. Saturday morning classes start with standing exercises for generating energy.
